Bangs can take an average hairstyle and give it that WOW factor

Celebrity Hair
The "Bang" factor-Photo Getty Images

Every individual’s face has a specific shape, so how do you know what the right bang is for you.  Here are the basic face shapes and what works best.
Square facial shape:  a layered bang that fall to or below your eyebrows are very flattering, especially if they are swept off to the side, add a bit of softness and texture to the ends to enhance the look even more.  Katie Holmes, Sandra Bullock, Mandy Moore, Demi Moore, Audrey Hepburn are amongst the sexy celebrities who have a square shaped face.
Round facial shape:  Start with the main haircut first then move to the bang-aim for long side-swept and wispy bang.  The side bang will help elongate the shape of the face. Cameron Diaz, Kate Moss and Carmen Electra know how to enhance their best features.
Heart shaped face:  Off center or side swept bangs are flattering to the heart shapes high forehead, as it will draw attention to your eyes and cheeks.  Depending on the thickness of the hair, a short wispy bang will also work. The bevel of beauties with heart shaped face, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Murphy and Jennifer Love Hewitt.
Last but not least the “perfect” facial shape, Oval- the goal is to add some width and fullness at the sides so that your face looks more symmetrical. But avoid creating too much volume at the top, or you will only make your face look too drawn-out and oblong. Beyonce, Jennifer Garner, Hillary Swank and Sarah Jessica Parker are amongst the A-list celebrities with oval facial shapes.

Spread the Word Nevada Storybook annual gala Las Vegas guest speaker, Veronica Cortez

The goal of Spread the Word Nevada is to promote literacy and to make it possible for all of Nevada's children to experience the magic of books.

This years Spread the Word gala is honoring NV Energy for their continuous support and financial generosity to the organization.

What better way to honor NV Energy; Veronica Cortez, not only is Veronica a huge fan of Spread the Word, but also a recipient of what the organization does for our community.

Veronica had been involved with Spread the Word since 2nd grade, now a Senior attending Rancho High School in Las Vegas, Veronica can still remember the first time Spread the Word delivered books to her school. Still in her possession is her original book bag they gave her at the kick-off assembly.

Her most exciting moment was realizing she did NOT have to give the books back.

Veronica was chosen to speak this evening based on her enthusiasm and her answers to a questionnaire and interview from the board of directors. Veronica said the impact from the program has changed her life. Her story stood out.

To get Veronica ready for this evening, Spread the Word, involved Las Vegas Celebrity Make Up Artist DiDi Perez-Greco, make up artist to Eva Longoria, Kim Kardashian, Mariah Carey and several other stars. DiDi volunteered her time to create the look for Veronica, on this auspicious occasion. On a regular basis, DiDi donates her time to the Las Vegas Community-why-she says; "it's the right thing to do and it makes me feel good."

When Veronica was asked what look she wanted, her response was a modern version of Betty Paige. Her dress, shoes and accessories spoke volume to the talented DiDi. To create her beautiful, yet youthful, look, DiDi began with smokey eyes, soft flirtatious eyelashes and finished with demure lips.

Veronica's Mom wanted her beautiful daughter to wear her hair in an upstyle and to accommodate the wishes of Mom, Andeen created Veronica's hairstyle was a modern version of a Betty Paige style. Soft subtle fingerwaves framed her face and a loose chignon was pinned in place at the nape of the neck

A special thanks to Whitley Clark for assisting both DiDi and Andeen with their work, creating Veronica's look for the evening.

The Venetician Hotel, Las Vegas, was host to the annual Spread the Word Storybook gala and the theme for the evening is; "Unlock the World of Literacy," with all contributions and proceeds being used to benefit at risk children living in Nevada.

Hair By Andeen: Power of a Dream

Hair By Andeen: Power of a Dream: "I wanted to share this poem from Marilyn Monroe, please enjoy. Power of a Dream To have a dream in your heart that you must make come tru..."

Power of a Dream

I wanted to share this poem from Marilyn Monroe, please enjoy.

Power of a Dream

To have a dream in your heart that you must make come true, to think about constantly - even wake up at two or three in the morning when everything's still, plotting and scheming new ways to fulfill

this desire that's burning so deeply inside,  it's no wish or whim - it will not be denied. Imagine it happening - set a picture in your mind,
your dream holds the power of how you will find a way that will lead you to all you hold dear, for when the student is ready the teacher will appear.

Then strive on believing your dream will come true,
be consistent, persistent in all that you do.
You'll come across hurdles - you'll stumble and fall,
some days it will seem like your back's against the wall.

Frustrated and weary and filled with self-doubt
but a voice from within you will rise up and shout,
"You know you can do this - just stick to your schemes,
don't dwell on the obstacles - focus on your dreams."

Be self-disciplined - do whatever it takes for the wall around success is to
keep out the fakes.

Whether you make them come true or you let your dreams fade, one thing is for certain - a price will be paid. The choice is all yours - which one will it be? The thrill of your victory or the agony of defeat.

Long hair over 35, to cut or not to cut

Fashion and Beauty magazines routinely recommend older women cut their hair, some going so far as to assign an arbitrary age - 40 or even 30 - after which long hair becomes a fashion no-no. Besides keeping hairstylists in business, what merit do these statements have?

All too often, women hang on to their long hair because they believe it make them look youthful. Yet, beauty and fashion magazines say there is nothing more aging than long hair once a woman reaches a certain age. The difficulty is knowing and accepting when you've reached the point "to cut" your hair shorter.

Stars today, such as Demi Moore and Sandra Bullock wear their hair long, are over 40 and look fabulous.

How many times have you had a bad day, "ruined" by a bad hairstyle-how many times have you canceled a date, or started your style over; some woman believe their hair exudes self esteem and their identity tends to be tied to their hair?

Emotionally, women are unable to cut their long hair. They usually have stopped wearing it down because, subconsciously, they realize it makes them look old; and when they pull it back they see cheekbones, a great smile, and fabulous eyes. So what is the point of keeping it long?

Changing your long dated style can not only give the illusion of looking years younger, but it can be a new beginning for a new you, a new polished looks that makes you feel invigorated, empowered. Long hair may be sexy, but shorter hair can be even sexier.

Tami Boubon, a Las Vegas Paralegal, says: "I do not buy into the idea that age, as a number, should guide a woman's life in any area. As with everything, our style changes as we develop. When we get to a certain place in our lives, we don't feel as comfortable wearing "cock pit" skirts or tops cut down to our navel and 6 inch stilettos. Some women go through life feeling that their flowing locks define them but sometimes they finally reach a point where they feel liberated enough to cut their hair into a shorter style that is more complimentary of their personality at that point in time. Maybe hair length and shoe height go hand-in-hand. But, I personally do not think it has anything to do with "age" as a number.

Maybe, it is better to say our hair style is reflective of our personality rather than our age. As you know, so many young, hot, trendy girls are rocking shorter styles now. I love it. For me, personally, I have cut my hair off and I hated it. I know trendy, professional women in their 50's-60's with long, gorgeous, classy hair. ...and their hair fits their personality. It's a very personal individual style choice and I think passing judgment on hair length based on age shows a lack of grace by the individual judging."

Every individual has an opinion on whether long hair on someone over 30 should be cut shorter; but what are the myths?

•Long hair ages a woman

•Older woman should have short hair

•Long hair on an older woman is unattractive

There are several myth's in the "hair world", to read more go to: Top Ten Hair Myths according to: Hair News Magazine by: Damien R. von Dahlem.

Ladies, if your hair is healthy, shiny and you take care of it; with frequent trims and maintain the color then-beauty is in the eye of the beholder and if you can look in the mirror and love yourself, then why cut your hair short.

Are you bored with your look, and your stylist just isn't listening

Frustrated with your Hair Stylist
Are you bored with your look, not connecting with your Stylist; do you find your Stylist is talking more about the night she had than about your style and color? Then perhaps it’s time to find a new Hairstylist.

Looking for a new stylist can be challenging — even if you’re a people person or great at networking. Here are some tips to help you find the perfect salon and stylist for you.

It’s always easiest to start with friends and family. I’m sure there’s someone close to you who has a hair style you admire. The cut doesn’t have to reflect your personal style, but there should be something about it that you really like — the way it stays so shiny or how the bangs hug the face. Don’t be afraid to ask her who her stylist is.

Find someone on the street whose color or cut really catches your eye. Ask them where they get their hair done-don’t forget to tell the how fabulous their hair looks-opens the door to great conversation and the willingness for them to share their Stylist.

When you have a few salon recommendations, book a consultation. Most consultations are free, and there should never be a commitment to make an appointment. If there is a consultation fee, usually they will deduct it from the bill after your services.

Once you’ve found the stylist of your dreams, be honest about any past hair traumas with other stylists and be absolutely honest about any home coloring or chemical straightening you may have done. Seriously, being honest from the get-go is crucial to getting a great end result.

Trust your stylist and remember that it’s a partnership. We can create a great style for you in the salon, but you have to work to keep it looking great at home.

To write or not to write

So you think you can write-define the definition of a writer:  someone who is literate, grammatically correct, someone who possesses the basic understanding of something that matters and feels the need to write about it-well that is what I am about to embark upon.
I promise, there will be grammer errors, perhaps mispelled words (love spell check) and I can assure you, there will be things you read-that will probably piss you off, but I also assure you, I will do my best to base things on facts.

Hmmm-facts,  opinions, these things matter in life an we all have them-so deal with it.

Life

Have you ever opened your eyes to a new day and thought-what the hell am I doing with my life, what have I done with my life, am I making a difference and where am I going.

Well today is that day.

The dreams I have had in my professional field-- I have fulfilled them-bigger and better than I had ever thought possible; I have a beautiful family, a loving husband-2 great kids-so why the questions?

HMMMMM???????

Life is an endless possibility-only we can choose to move forward or not.  Life can be difficult-life can hurt-life can really stink at times, but we-ME-can choose to move forward and make a difference.

App for the cell phone

Plug In: Technology Case Studies (Salon Apps)

Published: July 19, 2010

By Stacey Soble

SALON APPS

The next tech frontier in a world where technology is constantly evolving, these owners are the pioneers.

Khiem Hoang originally developed Umbrella Salon’s mobile App as a solution to the problem iPhone users had accessing the salon’s website—now he sees it as a direct connection between their phones and the salon.

NESTLED IN SAN JOSE, right in Apple Corporation’s backyard, is Umbrella Salon. Considering the surroundings, there’s little surprise that Khiem Hoang, Umbrella’s business manager, was one of the first owners to produce a mobile iPhone application for his salon. “I was proud of our salon’s artistic website, but I was also frustrated, because more than 400,000 iPhone users in the area couldn’t access the Flash-based site through their phones,” he says. “We discovered it was more cost effective to develop the App, than it was to reprogram our site.”

The simple App features a few photos of the salon and allows users to directly download the salon’s number, access directions to the salon or e-mail the front desk for an appointment request. “It’s not content rich, but it is information-rich, designed to provide direct connection from the clients’ phones to our front desk,” he says.

A Multi-Prong Approach

Roy Fredericks, co-owner of Austin’s Avant Salon Spa, always hears people comparing and contrasting one digital technology versus another—web versus Twitter versus Facebook versus e-mail. “But great businesses do it all at once,” he says. But what Fredericks doesn’t do, is communicate the same way through each tool. Here’s how he breaks it down:

• WEBSITE: “This is our online menu, our brochure.”

• FACEBOOK PAGE: “This is the face of Avant. It’s our company’s personality, and should never be used as a sales tool.”

• TWITTER: “This is a news feed—a place to broadcast news about charities we support, events and promotions. At Avant, each manager creates a promo daily based on resource availability.”

• THE AVANT APP: “This is our ‘salon’ —a place to share and educate through conversation. Salons have always been about where people learn about what’s happening in fashion, music, food, and local events.

• E-MAIL: “This is the most-effective, web-based marketing we use. We have a list of 35,000 emails, and we do a monthly communication to all clients for the cost of about $130 a month.”

It cost Hoang about $400 to develop the App, and he says he pays a $12 monthly fee to Apple to keep it rolling, but he feels it’s money well spent. “We’ve gotten some exposure to some new clients through the Apple website, and people think its progressive that a small business like us has its own App,” he says.

To get clients to download the free App, Hoang sent an e-mail announcement to a list of current and potential clients, as well as posted announcements on the salon’s Facebook and Twitter pages. The e-blast generated quite a bit of excitement—within its first week Hoang reported 562 click-throughs and 40 appointment requests. “I truly believe people are going mobile and it’s the best way to connect with people and the world instantaneously,” he says.

In Austin, Texas, Roy Fredericks, co-owner of Avant Salon Spa, has always been an early adopter of technology—his salon has been computer automated since 1987, and he launched the salon’s first website in 1997. When it came time to design a salon App, he wanted it to be more than a glorified website.

“We wanted it to be an interactive App-zine that celebrated the faces, music and events that make Austin a great city,” he says. “I’m surrounded by these crazy technology people and I’ve always been into guerilla marketing. This is guerilla marketing at its finest.”

For example, the latest edition of the App-zine revolves around the upcoming Austin Fashion Week and Austin City Limits Music Festival. Through the App, viewers can purchase tickets, add their name to the list of people going, or post comments and images. They can also listen to music snippets from bands that played last spring’s South by Southwest Festival, read the salon’s live Twitter and Facebook feeds, peruse salon imagery, view a collection of fashion, hair and music videos, meet the Avant ‘tribe’ of employees, and connect to the salon.

To encourage clients to engage with the App-zine, Fredericks is giving away a chance to win a free iPad—to enter the lottery, users simply have to download the free app and sign up. In addition, he’ll be using Push Notifi cation to send messages to subscribers’ phones regarding promotions and discounts from businesses that Avant partners with. “This App-zine does what salons have always done—it extends the community. We wanted to add value without marketing—we wanted this App to bring the ‘salon’ part of what we do,” he says.

“According to Nielsen Research, in 2008 there were 2.1 million iPhone users in the United States. In 2009, that number had grown to 6.5 million iPhone users.”

—Khiem Hoang, Umbrella Salon, in a presentation he gave at the Owner’s Forum at Oribe Backstage Las Vegas.

5 steps to success

Five Steps to Success

A great client experience starts with a great consultation, but is yours cutting it? Shauna Raisch, owner of Twiggs Salon Spa in Minnesota, developed her Five Point Consultation based on the principles of art. “You need to incorporate art principals when considering the face, like how it is affected by light and dark,” she says. Her consultation is included as part of each service at Twiggs.

1. Analyze facial shape to determine how to create a balanced look. “We determine what we are working with, where we need to increase or decrease width and what we need to emphasize or de-emphasize,” Raisch says.

2. Determine how to use color to enhance or detract. “For example, you need to add lightness any place where you need to increase width, or darkness to decrease width,” she says. “If a person has a triangular (or pear) shaped face, add a light color around the forehead and dark toward the bottom to create balance.”

3. Decide what treatments will improve the hair's integrity. "Figure out what the hair needs to be healthy,” says Raisch, whose salon offers at least 10 treatment options.

4. Consider the eyebrows, which Raisch says are the frame of the face. “Do you need to shape or color the brows to fit or enhance the face shape?”

5. Finish with a color cosmetic consultation. “Our stylists discuss how makeup will enhance the facial features,” she says. “At the end of each service, clients are taken to our makeup artist for complimentary touch-ups.”

Getting Ready for the "Big Wedding Day Do"

Wedding Day Hair

What to Do before the Big Day

Plan your wedding hairstyle and make up. These 2 things must work together and you don't want to find out at the last minute that something conflicts with something else. Don’t wear too much make up and make sure that the colour scheme match with your attire.

Choose your hairstyle before you choose your head dress or your veil. When you have chosen a head dress or veil to match your hairstyle try it out.
A Trial Run will show up any flaws in your plans and get everyone at ease for the big day.

Your hair style: Don't think of your current style as a starting block for your wedding style. By adding hair extensions or a hair piece you can add volume and length and completely change your look.

Also think about your wedding dress and try to match its style. The degree of formality of your dress should be matched by your hairstyle.

These are just a few tips for the big day-stay tuned for more.
